Introductory course to drone piloting in Mallorca

If you’ve just bought a drone, have never handled the remote control of a drone and don’t know where to start, don’t worry, you’re in the right place! In my introductory drone course, I will guide you step by step to learn how to fly your drone safely and professionally.

I am Javier Gómiz, photographer and videographer specialised in drones, and I have designed this classroom course in Mallorca to help you master the art of flying drones and edit your videos with Adobe Premiere once you have obtained your drone footage.

This course is aimed at people who have just bought a drone and want to learn from scratch, starting with the basics and then perfecting their skills in the air and in audiovisual editing.

If you want to know more about my career, I invite you to take a look at my biography, where I tell you a little more about my experience in the world of drones and aerial photography.

Throughout this article, I’ll detail what you’ll learn on the course, and how each day is designed to ensure that, by the end, you’ll be able to operate your drone with confidence, comply with flight regulations and create stunning visual content.

If you have any doubts about the learning process or about the legal requirements to fly a drone, don’t hesitate to consult my related articles about permits to fly a drone in Spain, how to use the ENAIRE map and flying drones in Mallorca.

What does the course consist of?

Day 1: Drone photography and video (optional)

The first day is dedicated to the basics of drone photography and video. This day’s subject matter is aimed at you, if you are interested in learning, understanding and combining the parameters available on your camera to switch from ‘automatic mode’ to using ‘manual mode’.

If your interest is only in piloting you can choose not to do this day and start directly with the content of day 2.

My recommendation is that if you don’t know how to take pictures in manual mode, that you DO take this day. In just 1 hour of class you will understand the basic concepts for taking images and apply them in the future, both to take pictures with your drone and with any other device that allows you to modify the exposure time, aperture and ISO.

These 3 parameters play a major role in how you handle light and how they affect the final result. I will show you how to set up your camera for changing light conditions and how to make quick adjustments while in the air.

Learn how to capture professional images in our introductory drone course.

One of the most important aspects of aerial photography is understanding visual composition to learn how to create balanced images that attract the eye. I will also talk about how to get fluid and natural shots, especially when you want to create cinematic shots. In addition, we will explore how to use polarising filters to improve video quality.

With all this, your drone will become not just a flying tool, but a professional camera capable of capturing cinematic quality images. If you are interested in learning more about how to improve your drone photography, I recommend you read my article on tips to improve your drone photography.

Day 2: The Aircraft. Technical Aspects

The second day of the course is entirely practical.

Master the controls of the drone in the drone piloting initiation course.

Here you will learn everything you need to know about the operation of the drone. I will guide you step-by-step on how to operate the remote control joysticks, how to navigate the controller screen and how to perform basic settings before each flight. This includes everything from setting up the GPS, to checking the battery status and safety systems.

One of the most important points will be to learn how to handle the drone’s movements in the air, from the most basic to the most complex kinematic movements. During this day, you will make your first flights, experimenting with different types of manoeuvres in order to get spectacular shots. As you progress, I will help you to perfect your control and make smooth and precise movements for professional videos.

This day is focused on familiarising yourself with navigation in the air and learning how to perform movements that will allow you to shoot smooth and aesthetically pleasing videos.

Day 3: Drone Permits

Drone flying involves, in addition to technical skill, compliance with legal and safety regulations. This day is dedicated to teaching you how to fly legally in Spain.

Through an introduction to the ENAIRE map, you will learn to identify permitted and restricted flying areas, as well as areas where special permits are required to fly.

I will explain how controlled airspace works and how to obtain the necessary permits if you want to fly in restricted areas or near airports. We will also go over protected natural areas (ENP) and special bird protection areas (ZEPA), and how to manage these flights within the law. This knowledge is key to avoid penalties and to always fly safely.

If you still don’t know how to manage the permits to fly, I invite you to read more about this subject in my articles on drone flight licences and how to use the ENAIRE map to consult the authorised areas. If you would prefer more specialised advice and for us to manage your drone flight permits for you, just let us know.

Day 4: Editing with Adobe Premiere (optional)

On the fourth day (optional), you will learn the basics of audiovisual editing. After you have captured your drone footage, it’s time to transform it into something truly professional. I will guide you through the whole process of exporting the files from the drone’s memory card to the computer, organising them properly and starting to work with them in Adobe Premiere.

You will learn from the basics of creating a new project and adjusting the Premiere interface to your needs, to how to make your first edits and colour corrections. You will also see how to create sequences and use basic effects to bring your videos to life. This day is geared towards enabling you to work efficiently on your footage and give it a professional finish.

Career opportunities for drone pilots after drone pilot training course

More and more companies and sectors require qualified professionals in this area, which makes this course an excellent investment for your professional future.

Aerial photography and video for business

One of the most sought-after fields is photography. and aerial video. Companies in the construction, architecture and digital marketing sectors need aerial imagery for visualisation projects, terrain analysis and product promotion. If you are interested in creating visual content, this is an ideal field for you.

Technical inspections and topography

Drone photogrammetry is also used to perform technical inspections of infrastructure such as bridges, power towers or buildings, without the need to put people at risk. In this field, drone pilots can work with engineering and surveying companies, carrying out measurements, topographic surveys and 3D mapping.

Precision farming

Precision agriculture is another sector that has embraced the use of drones for crop analysis, pest control and plant health monitoring. Drone pilots can offer their services to farmers or agribusinesses, helping to improve crop production and efficiency.

Renewable energy inspection

Drones are also used to inspect renewable energy installations, such as solar panels or wind farms, providing detailed images that help detect potential failures or maintenance needs.
